Celia Fancer (then president,) Captain Bill Larson, and Ed Commons

Ed Commons of the Natural Gassers club in Amarillo, Texas, recently ran across a newspaper article about the time that Natural Gassers and Star Trek brushed up against each other. Ed writes …

I ran across this in my files. Way back in 1994, I was the Toastmaster of the Day (the Toastmaster selected the theme back then) and the theme was Star Trek. Now most of our members know that I am a fan of science fiction and that includes Star Trek. The theme was met with several groans from our members.

I had an ulterior motive. My guest was Captain Bill Larsen. Captain Larsen is the Captain of the Lady Washington, a 1700’s sailing vessel. The Lady Washington is a sister ship of the Enterprise, which was burned by the British during the War of 1812. The Lady Washington was used for a scene in the movie Star Trek Generations. It was the only Star Trek scene filmed on an actual ship and not a set. The Lady Washington name plate was replaced with the Enterprise name plate for the movie.

The Lady Washington was the basis for the RLS Legacy in the animated feature Treasure Planet and also appeared in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl and as the Jolly Roger in ABC Television’s Once Upon a Time.
