In 1994 I was a very shy man when I was promoted to Safety Manager of the Styrene division of my company and from this asked to create safety programs. These programs were both written and oral training which meant I had to speak in front of a crowd. Fortunately a Toastmasters Club was formed at the company the next year and I became a charter member. Of the 42 original members I was the last one to give his “Ice Breaker” speech but within the next year I had become a Competent Toast Master. Knowing what Toastmasters had done for me I continued the Club after the company closed and am the only charter member still in the Club. While I still get nervous I can now speak in front of large crowds, have become the MC of our annual church play, play the lead for Vacation Bible School each summer, and many other opportunities. I am still very active in helping others to improve their leadership and speaking skills.
