Toastmasters Club 211 – Amarillo Toastmasters celebrated it’s 70th Anniversary with a party on February 21st in Amarillo. Toastmasters from years gone by came (including one who travelled from Abilene) to regale us with their favorite meeting stories.
We learned about a surprise marriage proposal (she said No!), as well as many other fun memories of Club 211 in earlier days.
Club 211 was chartered on January 1, 1942. Seasoned Toastmasters remembered Charter Members talking about Ralph Smedley & the International President that year coming to Amarillo for the Charter Ceremony.
We also learned from a 1937 Toastmaster Manual that things really haven’t changed much. A Chicago Club reported their success with a unique membership drive. The club was divided into four teams promoting friendly competition. Each team competed to get the most members during the membership drive. To aid them, an Angora Goat was purchased. Each week, the losing team had to take the Angora Goat home. No team wanted to be responsible for the goat for more than a week, so people really got on the ball to find new members!
Many thanks to Skip Forsythe, Club 211 President, and his team for putting this wonderful event together. Everyone had such a good time that no one wanted to leave!
